Edgenuity

Southwest Preparatory utilizes Edgenuity to deliver powerful, New Mexico Common Core standards in Social Studies and Science in grades 6-8. A pioneer in online education since 2004, Southwest Preparatory is one of Edgenuity’s first customers and in many cases provides quality control for its program. With intensive support from certified teachers, students receive the flexibility of an online curriculum plus support and mentorship from dedicated content teachers. Our program combines the best of traditional education paradigms with the flexibility of online education. This unique blended learning program can convert to fully at home instruction at a moment’s notice, an important feature in today’s COVID-19 uncertainty.

Spanish Instruction

Southwest Preparatory is a unique charter school in that it incorporates Spanish language instruction starting in 4th Grade! Instruction incorporates teacher instruction, hands-on and project-based learning, and online instruction that is developmentally appropriate at each grade level. Recent Community Based Activities have included:

  • Festival de Bellas Artes at the New Mexico Heritage Center
  • Dia de los Muertos at Kiva Auditorium
  • El Día de Acción de Gracias (Thanksgiving Day)

Smart Lab & Camp Smart Lab

Smart Lab is a cornerstone of Southwest Preparatory’s program. This high-tech class is a project-based curriculum delivered in a modern 21st-century lab setting. This block exposes students to the eight systems of technology, starting in 4th grade and adding more complicated systems as students get older. Smart Lab offers the latest in S.T.E.A.M. education with access to 3-D printing, advanced graphic arts, computer-aided drawing, movie and sound editing, science and data acquisition, programming, and robotics. Students synthesize their data collection and products into multimedia presentations regularly. Students say Smart Lab is one of their favorite classes and gave them the confidence to become collaborators and efficient presenters. There is no limit to what can be accomplished in Smart Lab.

Camp Smart Lab is another favorite summer tradition of Southwest Preparatory. This is a unique opportunity, open to all Albuquerque students entering 4th-7th grade. The camp focuses on STEAM technologies (Science, Technology, Arts, and Math) and features five different class offerings, including robotics, graphic design, digital photography, video production, and programming/2D animation.

Students in grades 6-8 have the opportunity to participate in our athletics programs, which include a variety of sports and extracurricular activities, including organized basketball and volleyball. Southwest Preparatory participates in the Albuquerque Charter School League. The current schedule for activities can be viewed on the SLC home web calendar. Afterschool

Our Afterschool Program runs from 3:30-5:00 PM Monday thru Friday and is available to Southwest Preparatory students for a small daily fee. It is designed to meet the needs of both students and parents by providing a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate place of supervision that includes opportunities to reinforce learning from school, teach social skills and encourage good citizenship.

Additional extracurricular programs will vary in Afterschool and may include well-planned activities such as art, music, science, academic support, recreation, and free time.
