Learn skills that will actually help you in life.

Southwest Secondary Learning Center was doing online learning before it was cool. Way back in 2002, before YouTube was even a thing, SSLC students were already spending most of their time in a computer lab. Their computers looked different, but the students completed self-guided lessons then, much like they do today. But from the beginning, it was obvious that kids also needed a chance to socialize, work together, and engage in hands-on learning.

That’s where the Smart Lab comes in. As a STEAM learning lab, it’s a place where students can learn about the principles of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. As a hands-on learning environment, it’s where kids can be creative, work together to solve problems, and explore new practical skills. And as a class, it’s a stepping stone to your post-graduation life.

Here are three things our STEAM learning program can help you do:

Find Your Passion

STEAM learning encompasses a huge variety of fields, from graphic design and computer programming to civil engineering and robotics. In the SSLC Smart Lab, you have access to technology you’ve probably never gotten to use before, like laser engraving machines and 3D printers.

Having so many options, and being able to decide which ones you’d like to try out and explore, is one of the best parts of Smart Lab. The teachers take things one step further by helping you discover new interests and passions to explore. SSLC uses a career and college readiness program called Naviance to help kids figure out a plan for transitioning from high school to the next big thing.

You can take career interest assessments and personality inventories that help you find your strengths and match you with potential career paths to explore. You’ll also get personalized guidance about what classes to take to set you up for success on your chosen path, and even get matched to college programs, internships, and other opportunities.

Gain Practical Skills

Science is part of STEAM. But not in a “mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell” way as much as a “come up with a solution to a problem and make it work” kind of way. In other words, STEAM learning is all about gaining practical skills and applied knowledge.

You’re not learning about theoretical concepts without seeing them at work. You’re getting empowered with the information you need to find your own answers.

It’s also a great chance to pick up skills that you can use in your life. Some of those skills are pretty universal. Problem-solving, communication, teamwork, and time management are a big part of every project you touch in Smart Lab.

Other skills are more specific but just as valuable. You can gain proficiency with the same types of equipment that professionals use all the time, whether you’re making keychains, T-shirts, or comic books. Your teachers can even help you get industry-recognized certificates for specific skills that can go on your resume and help you get a job in a cool field.

Get Real Job Experience

While Naviance can help you zero in on your interests and passions, Smart Lab teachers can help you take the next steps, if you’re ready. A Workplace Learning Program is available to give you access to internships and apprenticeship opportunities with local organizations throughout Albuquerque.

Juniors and seniors can apply for an internship through the Workplace Learning Program. The work you do as an intern can count as credit toward graduation, and it will give you a chance to develop practical skills in the workplace. As part of the program, you’ll also complete self-evaluations and check in with your teacher to find ways to hone your professionalism and get better at things like job interviews and workplace communication.

Basically, this is a way to test drive a job in a career field you might love, with the support of teachers who want you to succeed.
